Since 1991, Virginia's Statewide AHEC Program has become an effective
component in the Commonwealth's efforts to ensure an appropriate primary
health care workforce. Virginia's eight community AHEC's strive to assess
the specific health care needs of their communities and to develop effective
progams designed to meet those health care needs.
Goal 1: Health Career Programs:
Develop health careers recruitment programs for Virginia's students, especially
under-represented and disadvantaged students.
Goal 2: Student and Resident Training:
Support the community-based training of primary care health professions
students, residents, and other health professions students in Virginia's
underserved communitites.
Goal 3: Practice Support Services:
Provide educational and practice support systems for the Commonwealth's
primary care providers.
Goal 4: Health Promotion and
Disease Prevention: Collaborate with health, education, and human
services organizations to achieve the shared goal of improved health and
disease prevention for the citizens of the Commonwealth.
