Serving the counties of Caroline, Essex, Gloucester, King George, King and Queen, King William, Lancaster, Mathews, Middlesex, Northumberland, Richmond, Spotsylvania, Stafford, Westmoreland, and the City of Fredericksburg.
The Rappahannock Area Health Education Center (RAHEC) is an independent, non-profit corporation first established in 1994. Based out of the Northern Neck, it is led by a Board of 20 community members from health care, education, faith organizations and civic groups, RAHEC seeks to increase access to health care and improve the health status of the region through education and workforce development.
Major initiatives in the region include:
CHED - The Community Health Education and Development Program which improves the local capacity in rural counties to address health issues through the education and support of Community Health Partners (lay health educators).
Rural Practice - Seeks to involve health professions students in addressing how the social and environmental context of rural life impacts individual and community health status. Students participating in community-based rotations in the region may receive some housing and travel assistance if they undertake activities and exercises from the Rural Practice Manual.
RAHEC Speakers Bureau - Consists of health care professionals who make available "An Insiders Guide to Health Careers" presentation to schools and community groups.
Partners Promoting Health Careers - An informal coalition of health care and educational institutions in the Greater Fredericksburg area. In addition to being members of the RAHEC Speakers Bureau, PPHC sponsors career fairs and the "The Great Hospital Adventure" career exploration for children ages 4 to 9.
Northern Neck Middle Peninsula Telemedicine Consortium - Seeks to establish a telemedicine network linking local healthcare providers with specialists and sub-specialists located at academic medical centers and regional receiving hospitals.
Virginia SEARCH - Student Experiences and Rotations in Community Health is a National Health Service Corp program that introduces health professional students to primary care practice in rural and medically underserved communities. See our website at vasearch.org.
